Chez Provence Newsletter Premier Issue
Carol and I have read all of these. The first - "A Year in Provence" is also available on DVD. The BBC produced it for television; it's somewhere between amusing and hilarious. But it is, above all, a great introduction to the friendly, but quite independent French way of life.

To get around, go to the MAPS page: get the Knopf Guides if you want useful, light and easy; get Michelin or some of the others listed if you are driving and need detail.

Email me if you have a favorite. I'll add it - and probably read it, too.

Bonne Lecture

Start here. Light, quick read and very amusing.

This one is just as good. It's amazing all the stories that come from this series. This is a different style - following a new festival in a different region of France every month. A favorite.

Adam Gopnik has done a great job of telling what it's like, living in Paris and raising a small child. He also writes for the New Yorker. I like the discussion about the Bistros and about being a waiter. THis is a little deeper that Mayle's books, but very interesting and well done.

Carol found this one, but let me read it. It's similar to Mayle's books ... buying a new home in France, but there's more of a plot.

This is a spectacularly beautiful book. As you walk along the narrow alleys of a small village you will actually see the fountains and gardens and serenity shown in the pictures of this book. It's a tribute to the calm and bustle of Provence ... and to the photographer who has so clearly captured it.

No time to read A Year in Provence? Try the DVD. The BBC did a great job with it. Then read the book ... or one of the others on the plane.
