Mirabel is a small town, of 1,364 inhabitants, it sits on a rounded hill, surrounded by ancient houses. Gifted in 1026 by the Montaubans to the Abbey of Saint-Césaire d'Arles, it was owned by the Dauphins in the 14th century, when it was a monetary workshop. Famed for its warm climate and its beautiful views, particularly Mont Ventoux, Mirabel is well worth a visit. You can see the ruins of the old castle, the fortifications and the 12th century look-out tower, the Chapelle du Calvaire and the chapel Notre-Dame de Beaulieu. In the village itself there is a 13th century fountain and remnants of ancient fortified walls. It is situated halfway between the towns of Nyons and Vaison la Romaine that offer superb weekly markets. Nyons is famous throughout France and beyond for its olives, olive oil and apricots. Vaison boasts impressive Roman remains. Within a few minutes drive, there is an excellent swimming at the aquapark in Nyons and at the leisure complex, le Sagittaire. |
